Conferences and Workshops

The Department takes an active advocacy role in bringing issues of importance to the attention of older Iowans and those committed to their well-being. By providing opportunities for interested citizens and professionals to learn and share at conferences and workshops focusing on the lives and concerns of our growing ranks of elders, all Iowans will benefit.

Governor's Conference on Aging (GCOA)

The theme for the 29th Annual Governor's Conference on Aging, held on May 19 & 20, 2008, is "The Art of Dynamic Aging - Paint Your Own Picture."

Aging is more than a physical process; it is a journey with moments of great triumph, periods of setback and experiences that intrigue us. These experiences lift us and carry us along the road, each day finding us a little further down the path. Life's journey does entail risk, but our perceptions are often based on emotion rather than fact. We think about the risk of getting on a plane, of being in a strange place, of not being able to communicate. The reality is that the journey will change us, will make us grow and cause us to discover that the world isn't as we imagined. Experienced travelers know when we take a journey we have stories to tell and no one knows that better than older Iowans.

The 2007 Governor's Conference on Aging will explore the successes, challenges and all points in between along the journey of a lifetime. Older Iowans are living examples through their steadfast determination and resilience that aging is indeed a journey to be savored and treasured.

The 29th Annual Governor's Conference on Aging - The Art of Dynamic Aging - Paint Your Own Picture, is coming soon. The dates are May 19 and 20, plus a day of pre-conference intensives on May 18th. The conference will be held at the Sheraton West Des Moines Hotel. The registration brochure is now available.

The GCOA steering committee is pleased to announce the following keynote speakers.

This year we are offering an extra day of pre-conference intensives on Sunday, May 18. There are two sessions of 3.5 contact hours each, for a total of 7.0 contact hours. If you attend all three days, you could be eligible for 16.75 contact hours.
