State Board of Education

July 7, 2005

The State Board of Education held a telephonic meeting on July 7, 2005. The following Board members participated: Gene Vincent, Sally Frudden, Jim Billings, Charlie Edwards, Sister Jude Fitzpatrick, Wayne Kobberdahl, Greg McClain, Mary Jean Montgomery and Tara Richards. Absent: Rosie Hussey. Participating from the Grimes State Office Builiding, Des Moines, were Department Director Judy Jeffrey and Department staff members Gail Sullivan, Pam Pfitzenmaier, Carol Greta, Kathi Slaughter and Beverlee Adams. Also in attendance were Madelaine Jerousek, Des Moines Register and Daniel Gearino, Lee Newspapers.

President Vincent called the meeting to order at 1:15 p.m. for the purpose of discussing and taking action on four proposed public charter school applications: Elma Elementary, Storm Lake/Iowa central/Buena Vista Early College High School, Lincoln Academy of Integrated Arts, Northeast Iowa High School Charter.

It was moved by Sally Frudden and seconded by Sister Jude Fitzpatrick to approve the agenda as written.

The Board discussed the proposed charter school applications. The following action was taken:

Motion: It was moved by Charlie Edwards and seconded by Wayne Kobberdahl to approve the four charter school applications as proposed.

Vote: A roll call vote was taken: Ayes: Frudden, Billings, Edwards, Fitzpatrick, Kobberdahl, McClain, Montgomery and Vincent. Hussey, Absent. The motion carried unanimously.

President Vincent adjourned the meeting.
