NCES Course Code Classification System

In the fall of 1997, each public and nonpublic school building in the state of Iowa was mailed a copy of the NCES Course Code Classification Manual entitled. "A pilot Standard National Course Classification System for Secondary Education". This manual became the standard in Iowa for coding course information offered in grades 9-12. Since 1997, additional copies have been available by contacting:

Entire NCES Course Code Manual (Chapters 1 and 2) (964K) -
This is the entire manual that includes instructions, codes, and examples. It is approximately 183 pages long and may require excessive time for download.
Chapter 1- Instructions and Usage (182K) -
This document describes how the coding system works and also lists code descriptions for subject area, level code, unit value, sequencing term and year, and subject fields.
Chapter 2- Subject Fields and Course Descriptions (625K) -
This document includes subject field descriptions and course descriptions for each of the 29 subject areas. These descriptions should be used to match local course content with NCES course descriptions.
