Local Homeless Education Agency Liaison Toolkit
The Local Homeless Education Liaison Toolkit is a comprehensive tool that will assist both new and veteran local homeless education liaisons in carrying out their responsibilities. Over 200 pages of the best and most current information on increasing access to and success in educational opportunities for children and youth experiencing homelessness are provided in the Toolkit. The Toolkit includes chapters, appendices and a Powerpoint presentation. Alternative Residence Needs Assessment for Middle/Junior High School Students
A survey of Iowa’s middle and junior high schools to determine the extent of the need for alternative residential programs in 2001-02. Alternative residential programs are defined as housing alternatives that would keep children “out of the system”. A needs assessment survey was sent to middle and junior high schools in Iowa. A response rate of 62% (237 schools) was achieved. The report includes survey results, conclusions, and recommendations.

Teenagers Response to Homelessness
Needs in Iowa: This report focuses on the current status of homeless youth in Iowa who are runaways and throwaways; their plight, the dangers they encounter, and barriers to accessing protective and rehabilitating living arrangements.

Internet Resource Information
People who work with the issue of homelessness in capacities such as educator, graduate student, social researcher, or shelter provider frequently have a need for basic information, data and/or statistics about homelessness. This information may be necessary to develop proposals for funding, conduct research projects, and increase awareness of homelessness. Following is a list of Internet websites that provide access to information about homelessness. Most websites provide links to additional resources.

Rethinking orphanages for the 21st Century. (1999)
Sage Publications, Inc., 2455 Teller Road, Thousand Oaks, California, 91320. This edited volume is an attempt to rethink critical issues relating to the long-term residential education of at-risk, disadvantaged young people. It highlights issues that need further review by those policymakers and laypeople who wish to seriously consider a return of residential education for at-risk, disadvantaged young people.

The Education of Homeless Children and Youth

Educating Homeless Students: Promising Practices

This book was created to address concerns about homelessness through honest appraisals of the challenges faced by homeless children, youth and families; and, descriptions of promising practices created by individuals and organizations in diverse communities.

Nowhere to grow: Homeless and runaway adolescents and their familes
Aldine De Gruyter, Walter de Gruyter, Inc., 200 Saw Mill Road, Hawthorne, New York, 10532. This book reports the results of the authors study, Midwest Homeless and Runaway Adolescent Study. Interview results were obtained from 241 young men, 361 young women, and 201 parent/caretakers.
